Maria Yee

Maria Yee has hit our showroom floor and we couldn’t be more thrilled!

Maria Yee, Inc. is a U.S. Company with an international reputation for handcrafted furniture and a new favourite in lifestyle design. More and more we are becoming aware of the importance of ecofriendly productivity in every area of our lives.  Furniture making is no exception and when it comes to eco conscious production, Maria Yee has been making big strides in her contemporary green furniture designs.

While not the most cutting edge conceptually, the Santa Cruz designer does make eco minded, heirloom quality furniture that you can purchase for your home without totally breaking the bank.  And that, dear friends, is a major accomplishment.  Stylistically, her work is often an asian inspired modern mix.  We are featuring her gorgeous Laguana Dining Room and stunning Calistoga Bedroom. Both tastefully reflect her inspiration.

Her innovative manufacturing techniques and materials are what are so groundbreaking.  Most of the furniture is made from Bamboo Timbre, a proprietary solid bamboo specially developed for furniture manufacturing.  The bamboo culms, or stalks, are flattened, layered and bonded together in defined patterns to create solid boards as thick as 8 inches.

To that she added a new twist, Bamboo Joinery, an application of traditional Chinese joinery techniques to her material that allows her to eschew the use of nails and or screws  in her furniture. Joinery provides unyielding strength, ensuring that furniture will not weaken, squeak or crack over time.  Wood contracts or expands in response to humidity.  Maria Yee’s interlocking joints expand and contract with the piece, ensuring the strength is never compromised.  Furniture made with nails or screws will weaken over time as the wood shifts around the hardware. Using joinery techniques, including mortise and tenon, dovetail and floating panel, expert craftsmen handcraft her pieces.  Seal it all together with glue that meets E1 standards and you have quite a compelling product line.

The environmental and structural  benefits go on and on including no MDF or particle board, vegetable tanned leather, water base finishes, Tung Tree Oil finishes, formaldehyde free adhesives, recycled packing materials, and a state of the art, energy efficient manufacturing facility.

If you are someone who both cares about the environment and appreciates the art of fine furniture, Maria Yee is a must see product for you.

Tommy Bahama Royal Kahala

Nature’s beauty has always been a touchstone for timeless design, offering inspiration through exotic materials like woven rattan, split bamboo, penn shell, coco shell and sugar cane.

The Tommy Bahama brand is legendary for its sophisticated interpretation of island lifestyle through a blending of these natural materials.  Crafted from Ribbon Stripe and Quartered Mahogany veneers in an elegant dark Kona finish, Royal Kahala is the most refined and sophisticated of the lifestyles in the Tommy Bahama Home portfolio.

The collection evokes a sense of romance and intrigue through the fusion of eclectic design, exotic materials and rich finishes … a connoisseur’s approach to island living.

Antebellum

As a Designer, I have a real appreciation for pieces constructed using century old and time honored traditions.  These methods have withstood the test of time and include techniques such as dove tailing, mortise and tenon joinery and the age old art of veneering.  I love to see the woods and veneers crafted to show the natural beauty of the grains in each piece.  Such creations will be enjoyed for generations.

Fine Furniture Design and Marketing brings us the Antebellum Collection.  It is a new, relaxed traditional look styled in the tradition of period pieces, crafted of walnut solids, figured swirly mahogany veneers, with inlays of maple and ebony veneers.  Antebellum truly is a combination of craftsmanship, function and beauty.

Althorp Dining Table & Chairs

Althorp Dining TableGeorge III ChairOne fortunate reader will soon enjoy dining at a beautiful, unique Althorp dining set.  Inspired by the 1835 circular extending dining table, designed by Robert Jupe., the table offers the perfect solution to the question: how do you get a round table that seats six to expand at Christmas or Thanksgiving to fit 8-10, and still keep its circular shape? The ingenuity of both the design and the engineering sees you start  with a 62.5” diameter expanding to a 78” diameter.  Carefully concealed beneath the 6 triangular shaped sections of the tabletop are leaves that are easily folded out by one person.  This is done by pulling out the triangular shaped pieces and opening the self storing leaves. No bulky leaf storage and no struggle to fit them in place or pull them out!  Essentially it is like cutting a pie into 6 slices, pulling each of those slices away from the center a little and adding filler pieces to make a bigger pie.  This table is a replica on the original found  in Princess Diana’s childhood home, Althorp.  Constructed of mahogany the top is crossbanded with burl and rosewood.  It is accompanied by six, stunning, George the Third, mahogany chairs with leather seats.  The seven piece set normally retails in excess of $25,000, however, unfortunately for us, we need the showroom space.  We have no other choice but to clear ours out at a sacrifice price $9,999!  We definitely just made someone’s day!  Could you possibly be that someone?  Check it out.
